Supporting Young Befriendees to Grow

The greatest gift you can give any young person is your valuable time.

Space @ The Broomhouse Hub’s Youth Befriending programme was awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) for 2024.

This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.
Created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty The late Queen’s Golden Jubilee, The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities. This marks the second year of KAVS; recipients are announced annually on 14 Nov., The King’s Birthday.

Space @ The Broomhouse Hub is one of three Edinburgh-based charities—alongside Edinburgh School Uniform Bank and Spartans Community Foundation—to earn the 2024 accolade.

Representatives of Space Youth Befriending received the award crystal and certificate from Robert Aldridge, Rt. Hon. Lord Provost, and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, in March 2025 at the City Chambers.

Two volunteers joined other recipients of the 2024 award at a garden party at Holyroodhouse.

We are very proud to continue to hold an Excellence in Befriending Award from Befriending Networks UK for our work on this vital community service.

Space’s Youth Befriending service offers one-to-one support to young people aged five to 16 across Edinburgh affected by harms from substance use and gambling within the family.

Befriending helps reduce isolation and loneliness and strengthens emotional and physical well-being, which fosters a greater sense of self-worth and belonging.

Our volunteers help young people build confidence, resilience, and self-esteem whilst lowers feelings of social anxiety as they explore new interests, experiences, and activities.

Space for Youth Befriending provides children and young people aged five to 16, living citywide in Edinburgh, with a volunteer befriender who, once a week for two to three hours, supports and encourages them to explore new activities and find fresh interests and hobbies, with a view to engaging in local youth provision.

Befriending matches are based on shared interests and entirely person-led; the volunteer helps their young befriendee build confidence and self-esteem, improve social skills, and make friends outwith their peer group through an individualised programme.

Befriending can make a real difference to a young person’s life, helping them access opportunities they may not otherwise have had.

We aim to:

Involve others
• Treat everyone with fairness and respect
• Be responsible and accountable for our actions

Do you want to make a positive difference in a young person's life?
