Developing skills for employment and life

Group members’ thoughts on the course:

‘I have had so much fun in this group.’

‘I feel my confidence has increased because of this course.’

‘I really enjoy the speakers [who come] to talk to us.’

We run a 10-week group programme aimed at Edinburgh-based people who are unemployed, wanting to develop their job-seeking skills, and interested in working toward a better future.

Each week covers something different, with sessions focused on supporting people to develop skills such as learning how to communicate better and understanding how to work well with others in a team.

Practical skills such as learning how to write a CV or preparing for a job interview are covered, as well. Some sessions are even dedicated to helping members build confidence and recognise the importance of maintaining good health and wellbeing.

We also try to bring in speakers from different industries throughout the course to give members the opportunity to learn about different roles and what to expect from certain career paths.

All of our sessions are designed to be engaging and interactive, and upon completion of the course, each member is presented with a certificate of achievement for their hard work.

Space also offers a digital drop-in programme for parents seeking support on the job hunt. Pop into the Space Kitchen Café Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. for a free hot drink and advice.
