Board Trustees enable Space to become the charity it is today
The more than 250 volunteers who support The Broomhouse Hub share our goal of ensuring local communities thrive and everyone has the means to live life to the fullest.

Helen Forsyth
Chair of the Board
Helen worked in the third, public, and housing sectors for 42 years. She retired in 2020 as the Chief Executive of a housing association in Scotland, where she worked for 13 years.
Helen is the Vice Chair of the South of Scotland Enterprise agency and Chair of the Traverse Theatre. She is passionate about developing strong communities and empowering people. She enjoys mentoring new senior managers in the third sector. In her spare time, she runs a Community Theatre company based in South West Edinburgh.

Catherine is a senior tour coordinator with Tartan Viking Tours. The 24-year-old describes herself as a 'jack of all trades, master of none', boasting experience in every aspect of running a business.
An extremely hard worker who is keen to learn and enjoys problem solving, Catherine is looking to expand her business knowledge and make a difference in the third sector.
Catherine lives in Edinburgh, not far from The Broomhouse Hub.

Clare had a 25-year career in social housing in property, project, and contract management; customer service and complaints handling; and social enterprise roles.
In 2019, she established her own business and cultivated a reputation as a top short-let management and cleaning company, with properties of historical importance. She spearheaded diversification through the pandemic, and even purchased and refurbished a neglected narrowboat—now a successful holiday retreat at The Kelpies.
A jack of all trades, Clare has a passion for social enterprise and has spent many years supporting third-sector organisations.

Gillian has extensive experience in finance, audit, and corporate governance, and is a qualified chartered accountant with the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland (ICAS).
Gillian is passionate about helping people to reach their full potential and lead fulfilling lives. She has a particular passion for supporting inclusivity in the workplace by opening up career opportunities to those with disabilities and who have been unable to further their career through traditional graduate routes.
She holds a voluntary role with ICAS, where she has advocated for non-traditional routes into the chartered accountancy qualification, making it accessible to those who cannot follow a university route or wish to re-train in later life.

With a varied background in HR, executive search, advertising, public and third sector roles, Stuart has a keen interest in working with individuals who require assistance to overcome barriers. He is a strong advocate of a collaborative approach to solving challenges that affect us all.
Working in HMP Edinburgh for five years (until 2019), he successfully matched employers with prisoners after release.
As current Social Enterprise Employability Manager with Cyrenians, Stuart's team have provided pre-employment training for employers in St James Quarter. He was also involved as a panel member and chair of Children’s Hearings Scotland for five years (until 2020).
Stuart also serves as a Trustee with Access to Industry, an Edinburgh charity supporting individuals into education or employment. Alongside other projects, they are actively involved in guiding prisoners toward employment at HMP Edinburgh and His Majesty's Young Offender Institution (HM YOI) Polmont.

Emma is a digital and communications expert with more than 10 years experience in private and charity sectors. She currently works as head of digital for a national blood cancer charity.
She and her fluffy ragdoll cat live locally to The Broomhouse Hub and are consistently amazed by the incredible work Space does, and the community surrounding it.
Emma hopes her experience in digital, communications, strategy, and digital transformation can help further the great work this organisation does and make an even bigger difference to the community.

Fraser is a service design lead at the Scottish Government, where he leads the user-centred design team for the Warm Scottish Welcome Scheme (Ukrainian resettlement).
He has extensive experience working in the public sector and understands the unique challenges and opportunities that come with designing and delivering community-focused services, as well as the policies and processes needed to make them happen.
Having lived locally for most of his life, Fraser has seen firsthand the impact organisations like Space @ The Broomhouse Hub have on the community.
He previously volunteered as a youth befriender (in partnership with Big Hearts Befriending) and has been a Scout leader with the local Scout group in Carrick Knowe for many years.
'I know how important spaces like this are for local people, and I'd love to use my professional skills, experience, and knowledge of the local community to help support the great work Space is doing,' according to Fraser.

Ann is an experienced HR practitioner who has worked for more than 30 years within private and public sectors.
Starting out in catering management, Ann moved into training delivery and HR for a leading support services group, before joining the Scottish Ambulance Service, where she worked for 16 years in different roles covering workforce planning, recruitment, HR, and equalities and inclusion. In this fast-moving environment, Ann provided HR advice and support for managers, reported on organisational activity with regard to equality and inclusion, developed policies, and worked with staff to establish staff networks and enhance practice for the workforce and stakeholders with whom the service engaged.
Quality service delivery and lasting relationships have been at the heart of Ann's working life, including those with customers, patients, staff, and stakeholders in the community.
Originally from Yorkshire, Ann has lived in Scotland for more than 30 years, and lives with her partner in South Edinburgh.
Space Membership
If you don’t have the time to join our Board of Trustees, but want to play a part in what we do at Space, you can become a member of our charity instead!
Members are at the heart of our work. If you live in Broomhouse (or South West Edinburgh), you can join a growing group of people making a difference in our community. You can be as active as you like—there are no commitment requirements when becoming a member.
We have three types of membership:
Ordinary Membership
If you are 16 years or older and live in the South West Neighbourhood Partnership Area, you can become an ‘Ordinary Member’. This entitles you to vote at our AGM and, if you want to, stand for election onto our Board. Ordinary members also elect people to serve as directors and make decisions about changes to the charity’s articles.
Associate Membership
Associate Membership is open to non-local individuals and organisations that support our objectives. Associate Members are not eligible to stand for election to the Board or vote at general meetings.
Junior Membership
Junior Membership is open to young people aged 12 to 15 who live in the South West Neighbourhood Partnership Area. Junior Members are not eligible to stand for election to the Board nor to vote at general meetings.

All members also receive a membership card, which allows a 10% discount in our café.
