Bookbug Volunteer

Join our Bookbug team

Space provides weekly Bookbug sessions, which aim to provide a safe space for parents and carers to come along with their babies and children to learn new skills and engage socially with others in the community.

We believe Bookbug is a great first step to connecting and building trusting relationships with parents or carers who directly support a baby or child.

Our sessions help families to improve their language and communication skills, build confidence in providing a nurturing home environment, and increase social and emotional wellbeing of parents/carers and the child.

This role covers our weekly Bookbug sessions, which take place on Tuesdays from 9-11 a.m. at The Broomhouse Hub.

Help us deliver a fun and engaging service

Key Tasks
  • Set up the room with resources and equipment, as directed by lead coordinator.
  • Record attendees and take food orders as people arrive
  • Clear away equipment at the end of the session
  • Build relationships with parents, carers, babies, and children
  • Take part in sessions and encourage others to do so
  • Offer praise and recognition to help increase self-esteem and confidence
  • Support the lead coordinator to create opportunities for participants to experience new activities in the sessions
  • Observe participant’s involvement in the sessions and feedback to lead coordinator

  • Full training to provide the resources and ability to effectively help run Bookbug sessions. We hold frequent training sessions throughout the year and have many pathways to further training and employability programmes available within the organisation.

  • Ability to engage directly with the local community and build long-lasting connections.

Remuneration/Expenses:

This is an unpaid position. However, reasonable expenses associated with the role may be reimbursed.

Bookbug Induction includes:

Successful applicants will be subject to an Enhanced Protecting Vulnerable Groups (PVG) before joining Bookbug sessions.

What we’re looking for in our Bookbug volunteers

Volunteers must:
  • Be 18 years or older to lead Bookbug sessions
  • Be confident in and enjoy singing, reading nursery rhymes, and encouraging interactive play in a large group setting
  • Have the ability to comfortably communicate with parents, carers, and their young families
  • Have the ability to recognise positive qualities and skills that a child or young person may have and have a desire to help others learn
  • Be sensitive to the needs of others and can be adaptable to new and challenging situations
Volunteers should:
  • Have experience spending time with parents, carers, and/or babies and children
  • Have some knowledge of the current issues affecting children and young people and their families

Please note: No qualifications or experience is necessary to volunteer with us, as full training will be provided by our skilled team of staff members.
