👑 Youth Befriending Earns KAVS 👑
Congrats to our Youth Befriending team on the prestigious award!
Space @ The Broomhouse Hub’s Youth Befriending programme was awarded The King’s Award for Voluntary Service (KAVS) for 2024.
This is the highest award a local voluntary group can receive in the UK and is equivalent to an MBE.
Created in 2002 to celebrate Her Majesty The late Queen’s Golden Jubilee, The King’s Award for Voluntary Service aims to recognise outstanding work by local volunteer groups to support their communities. This marks the second year of KAVS; recipients are announced annually on 14 Nov., The King’s Birthday.
Space @ The Broomhouse Hub is one of three Edinburgh-based charities—alongside Edinburgh School Uniform Bank and Spartans Community Foundation—to earn the 2024 accolade.
Representatives of Space Youth Befriending will receive the award crystal and certificate from Robert Aldridge, Rt. Hon. Lord Provost and Lord Lieutenant of the City of Edinburgh, in March 2025 at the City Chambers.
In addition, two volunteers will join other recipients of this year’s award at a garden party at Holyroodhouse later in the summer.
🤩 Space & EIF Add WOW! Factor 🤩
Young people in SW Edinburgh to benefit from employability partnership
Starting 20 Feb., Space’s WOW (Wellbeing Onto Work) Project will support a cohort of 10 young people (aged 16-24) to take part in an eight-week course working alongside various teams within the Edinburgh International Festival.
Members will learn aspects of branding, digital marketing, audience experience planning, and developing wider job skills. They’ll also have the unique opportunity to help deliver the International Festival’s public programme in August.
‘This is a wonderful opportunity for our WOW! Project participants to gain an amazing insight into what is required to put on one of the biggest and best cultural festivals anywhere in the world,’ Esther Kuperji, Space Youth Participation Worker, said.
Training will take place in The Broomhouse Hub and the Festival Hub on the Royal Mail, with the project culminating in a presentation about a type of show or event which could be put on in the heart of the capital.
Previous cohorts worked with Edinburgh Zoo (pictured) to build the skills and confidence needed to enter the workforce.

🎶 When EIF Met Beacon Club 🎶
So many moments of laughter, joy, and hilarity
As the Edinburgh International Festival’s first Community Connections Hub, Space has been working with EIF to bring more arts and culture to The Broomhouse Hub.
Following a successful run of the Philharmonia Orchestra VR experience in August, EIF facilitator Lucy Drever—alongside violinist Colm Ó Braoin and percussionist Calum Huggan—joined The Beacon Club for some very special sessions.

Space @ The Broomhouse Hub delivers more than 20 projects with the help of some 70 staff members and 250 volunteers. But we can’t do any of it without support from our amazing southwest Edinburgh community.
Every donation—from pennies between the sofa cushions to gifts in your will—makes a real difference to the lives of disadvantaged young people and vulnerable adults.
We know times are tough and not everyone can reach into their own pocket. Fundraising on our behalf contributes to programmes focused on physical and mental wellbeing, education and training, youth work, community care, and support for older people.
You don’t have to jump out of a plane or swim the Forth. Be creative: host a coffee morning, games night, charity football match, etc.
🗸 £5 covers the cost of a meal for a hungry child
🗸 £10 supports a visit to The Beacon Club for an older person with dementia
🗸 £20 provides a befriending visit and activities for a child in kinship care
🗸 £50 can help a young adult carer with energy costs or provide a clothing voucher
🗸 £100 allows us to cover the cost of an ESOL tutor to help people learn new skills and get into work
🗸 £250 means a day trip to bowling or another activity for disadvantaged young people
🗸 £500 helps us buy new equipment for our many groups and classes
Whatever you choose, it will make a difference.
