Space Summer: Fun in the Edinburgh Sun

It’s been a busy summer across Space’s programmes, from the Broomhouse Street Party to young people’s trips around town.

Scroll down to learn more about our Youth Befriending, Young Carers, and Friday Youth Club projects, and see what the team and participants got up to this year.

Youth Befriending Summer Programme 2025

Space for Youth Befriending provides children and young people aged five to 16, living citywide in Edinburgh, with a volunteer befriender who, once a week for two to three hours, supports and encourages them to explore new activities and find fresh interests and hobbies, with a view to engaging in local youth provision.

Befriending matches are based on shared interests and entirely person-led; the volunteer helps their young befriendee build confidence and self-esteem, improve social skills, and make friends outwith their peer group through an individualised programme.

Young Carers Summer Programme 2025

Being a carer at a young age can be a difficult task; it may limit opportunities to socialise or impact on school, as caring duties come before everything else.

Space @ The Broomhouse Hub’s Young Carers groups run four days a week (Monday-Thursday), providing a chance to make new friends and get peer support over a hot dinner—as well as enjoying the chance to just be kids and play!

Space also provides one-to-one tailored support—working on an individual basis with each child to make sure they are as confident as possible and getting the help they and their family need.

Friday Youth Club Summer Programme 2025

Our Friday Youth Club is a safe space for the young members in the local and surrounding areas to come along, hang out with friends, and enjoy fun activities—free of charge.

Youth groups play an important part in making sure that children have a ‘third place’ outside of school and the home to interact with others and help identify themselves as part of the wider community.

This is also a great opportunity to meet people outside of school and engage with other young people from different backgrounds.

We currently provide two separate Friday Youth Club groups: one late-afternoon session for ages eight to 11, and an early-evening session for ages 12 to 14. Both take place every Friday at The Broomhouse Hub.

Our youth work provision is driven by the young people themselves—ensuring they get their say in decision-making and giving them a ‘seat at the table’ to shape their own experience with the service.
