Stories from across South West Edinburgh
Space @ The Broomhouse Hub trustee Alastair Cruickshank is training to run the Edinburgh Marathon Festival 10K in May—and raising money for us along the way.
‘As a trustee, I wanted to do more than just be part of the group that oversees the management and administration of Space @ The Broomhouse Hub,’ Alastair told Space. ‘However, with work commitments, it is difficult for me to get involved in the day-to-day activities of the organisation.’
Enter the EMF. The annual springtime running festival was the perfect vehicle for Alastair to raise money for and awareness of Space ‘and the great work that it does.’
‘Not knowing how far I could run, [or] if indeed I could run, I drew up a training plan to run five [kilometres],’ he explained. ‘I started my training in October 2023, not yet knowing what run I was going to do or what distance was achievable.’

Volunteer Spotlight
We love our volunteers
Youth Befriender Tasia Meadows understands children.
A former au pair, nanny, and nursery worker, Tasia ‘thoroughly enjoyed’ working with kids, despite embarking on an unrelated career.
‘Youth Befriending drew my attention due to the one-to-one sessions, alongside group activities, offering the power of positive mentorship on a young person’s life,’ she said.
Tasia’s been doing just that for nearly five years, befriending three young people aged six to 13 since July 2019.
‘I have experienced lots of different and exciting activities with my young person,’ she said, from creating personalised scrapbooks to doing festive crafts to visiting Edinburgh’s Winter Wonderland and pantomime at Christmas.
‘A firm favourite with all the young people has been spending time at the horse yard where I keep my horse,’ Tasia revealed. ‘I don’t think I truly realised the positive therapeutic impact of the horses until I witnessed the young people’s confidence grow as they interact and learn.
