Space Young Carers, Beacon Club Secure Shared Care Scotland Grant Funding

the heart of, take care of each other, feelings, emotion, connectedness, greeting, be thankful, together, be thankful, be thankful, be thankful, be thankful, be thankful
We’re thrilled to have received a £70,000 Shared Care Scotland Short Breaks Fund grant for Space at The Broomhouse Hub‘s Beacon Club and Young Carers projects, which provide respite for carers and their loved ones.

The Creative Breaks programme provides 12-month grants to third-sector organisations to develop and deliver services for carers of adults, young carers, and the people they support.

This money will be split between the two programmes, each receiving £35,000 toward their regular operating costs.

The Beacon Club

(Jess Shurte/Edinburgh International Festival)

The Beacon Club is an enriching and stimulating daycare service for older people with dementia and those facing social isolation or loneliness. We work to improve members’ quality of life by connecting them with dedicated staff and nurturing volunteers.

We provide refreshments on arrival, a choice of hot meals at lunchtime, and a blend of activities and outings to suit all preferences. And whilst we do ask members to make a small contribution, the costs of running the club will be helped along by the funding from Shared Care Scotland’s grant.

While The Beacon Club is about providing high levels of care for older people, it also serves as carer respite. Carers—approximately 16% of whom support individuals with dementia*—can enjoy several hours to relax, unwind, and manage their affairs, knowing their loved one is in good company.

Young Carers

Caring can start at an early age: from helping a disabled parent around the home or attending to a sibling who needs additional aid. Whatever the situation, we have a way to help.

Being a carer from the age of five can be a difficult task; it may limit opportunities to socialise or impact on school, as caring duties come before everything else.

Space @ The Broomhouse Hub’s Young Carers groups run four days a week, providing a chance to make new friends and get peer support over a hot dinner—as well as enjoying the chance to just be kids and play.

‘It gives me a breather from helping with my sister, and it has been nice to make new friends’ one young carer said.

Huge thank you to Shared Care Scotland—the national carer organisation with short breaks and respite at its core—for their generosity and for supporting the local community.
